afsaneh A michaels

Throughout her life Afsaneh Michaels has had a curiosity and fascination with the beauty of the natural world wherever she has found it. Afsaneh’s art contemplates the intrinsic and intimate yet ordinary qualities of nature’s elements with universal ideals of beauty. Her paintings seek to convey the poetry of nature in its grand displays in the sky as cloud formations: each cloud expressing the atmosphere’s moods like a persons feelings. While her drawings of leaves and flowers, insects and animals capture the particular beauty of each specimen not representing their natural family but each one with its own unique depth and complexity.  Afsaneh uses fresh specimens whenever possible for her work, even insects are drawn from insect  collections at UC Berkeley's life sciences entomology museum.

Afsaneh has painted and drawn most of her life. She has studied art and design and landscape architecture. She has worked and exhibited in galleries and museums in the United States, Europe and Africa.

She began painting clouds in Africa where she lived and worked for the National Museums of Kenya while creating a life-size mural reconstruction of a two million year old fossil landscape for a prehistory exhibition in Nairobi. She also designed exhibits for the Sackler Museum in Washington, D.C.

She studied renaissance master drawing techniques in Florence in Italy where she lived for three years studying drawing and fresco techniques. Now she lives in the San Francisco Bay Area of California where she finds most of her inspiration for painting and drawing. Afsaneh gives workshops in painting and drawing in Berkeley.
